With the current trend to make multiple models with same two basic Bonneville engines there is no way IMO they would make a completely ground up bike. Not cost effective. But they did the same in 2002 and 2003. The TBA and Speedy were based on the Bonneville standard. Same basic engine different tank and was the frame different?

Yes, the frame was a LOT different. The rake, the swingarm/shocks, forks, all very different and the bike weighed 100Lbs more. It was a whole different frame. different airbox even because of the different frame. Very different bike except the engine, except for the different cams. This pic is basically a bobber with a different seat.

I noticed it's chain drive, belt is the way to go imo.

Just for the record, i don't want chain drive because it's better. I want it because of the fact i can easily change it myself, do so if on the road 100 mies from home if theres a bike shop of any kind nearby and not having to worry about a 100 mile tow, and finally, to never have to pay $650 to have a new belt installed ! And thats without pulleys should it need those at an added $800 ! If not for all that, i'm with ya.....love the belt. But it's not worth it to me. I'll take a chain for now on given a choice, even tho i UTTERLY DETEST lubing it and cleaning it and the wheel.

The 865 bonnie has a 360 degree crank and the America/Speedy has a 270 degree.

I have just spoken to my contact in Triumph and he tells me the bike will have twin shocks and will be available in April/May 2018.

Have to say, that rider looks reasonably tall and looks cramped!!!

I'm kinda w Rich on the belt vs chain. After having 2 Tbirds I would not want to go back to lubing every 300-500 miles. On my last trip that would have been 4-5 times. It's a PITA. I love my belt and do too much Touring to want to go back to chain. I can't wait to see the new Speedmadter if they call it that, but I doubt if I would be tempted to trade my Commander.

I like the no shock look. I would have like a hard tail look on the TB personally. As for small bikes they are no fun on long journeys two up. Chains! You can keep them, shaft drive maybe

...still not interested but another article Link
And i read the Bobber is the hottest selling bike in Triumph's history.

Very clever of Triumph. If you're married and sold on bobber, you need to buy two!

I'm interested as a replacement for the wife's '02 TBA, we did a Back to Black in Sacramento on 01/04/18. We were able to try on the three Speedys and the Bobbers that they had at the Vintage Monkey. The wife said that it fit her for the ability to flat foot and comfort to bars reach. I'm not getting any younger, and the weight of the T-bird can be a hand full at times, maybe a trade in down the rode for me as well.

It still interests me as a replacement for the wifes bike ( 750 Shadow ) and the only drawback is that it's more expensive than my T Bird ( $ 12,490 ).

Perhaps wait a year and buy used. And I've seen a few deals on bobbers.

Absolutely hated the test mule picture - but cannot deny in certain configs it can look beautiful and that 1200 is a cracking motor...

Thunderbird is a highway star imo. I rode an '03 BA to Sturgis (1300 miles) and the lightweight (bike) was manageable.

...like to hear someone's thoughts riding the new Speedmaster, maybe a longer jaunt.

I went up to the Motorcycle Show up in Abbottsford, B.C. a couple days ago, and saw the new Speedmaster in person and had a chance to sit on it. While Triumph may or may see this as the T-Bird replacement for their cruiser line, I do not...it's a good-looking bike, but it was smaller in person than I'd anticipated and just didn't have the confident, muscle-cruiser vibe that the T-Bird had in spades. If I was forced to buy something from the Bonneville line, it would be the true T120 over this new Bonneville Speedmaster. I miss my T-Bird (traded off last year), but if Triumph hopes to lure me back to the fold they'll have to do better than the new Speedmaster.

It's funny. Triumph just released an online first ride review in San Diego. Their rider and bike pics looked good ...a balance of man and machine! But in the fine print he weighed 150 lbs (didn't say height). Anyway the Speedmaster isn't designed for interstate or large riders imo. Can you imagine 2 up and around 6 ft. Tall?? ...Triumph's brewing something to bridge the (cruiser) gap between 1200 and 2300.

Depends on the gearing. If it's the same as the bobber then it will be rather low for interstate. but if it's geared like the bonnies it should be fine. I imagine the 1200 is geared higher then the old 865's, and my 865 speedmaster could cruise forever at 80 MPH. In fact, i once went thru the desert at 90 MPH for about a couple hours once on a 105 degree day and it didn't phase it. So if you're not bigfoot i see no reason a 1200 shouldn't be able to do that. Of course as i said, the bobber is geared low according to my dealer. But then theres always the option of another front tooth or 2.
Of course no matter how you look at it the Tbird will do interstate *better* for sure.
